Neat hack

1. Prepare mower safely

Before you begin any maintenance on your lawn mower, safety is the top priority. Start by turning off the mower completely and disconnecting the spark plug wire. This prevents accidental starting while you work on the blade, which could cause serious injury.

Next, tip the mower gently onto its side so that the air filter and carburetor face upward. This positioning helps to avoid fuel leakage and potential fire hazards. Make sure the mower is stable and won’t tip over while you’re working.

Wear sturdy shoes and consider working on a flat, clear surface to keep your footing secure throughout the process. Having a clean, well-lit workspace will also make each step easier and safer.

2. Remove the blade

Removing the lawn mower blade requires the right tools and caution. Use a socket wrench that fits the blade bolt to loosen and remove the blade. Holding the blade firmly with a thick glove or a piece of wood can prevent it from spinning while you work.

Inspect the blade and mounting hardware for any signs of damage or excessive wear. If the blade is cracked, bent, or severely worn, replacement is safer than sharpening. Keep track of any washers or bolts so you can reinstall the blade correctly.

Once the blade is free, place it on a stable surface where you can perform sharpening without risk of injury or damage.
