3. Artificial light and brain confusion

Artificial light at night confuses the brain’s natural timing system, the suprachiasmatic nucleus, located in the hypothalamus. This internal clock relies on natural light cues to regulate sleep and wakefulness. When artificial light is present during night hours, it sends conflicting signals that disrupt this clock.

Exposure to light—especially blue and white wavelengths—after sunset can make the brain think it is still daytime, delaying the production of melatonin and interfering with the body’s ability to prepare for sleep. This confusion can lead to irregular sleep patterns and difficulty maintaining consistent sleep quality.

4. Sleep quality reduction

Disruptions caused by artificial light and screen exposure reduce the amount of deep, restorative sleep phases, such as slow-wave sleep and REM sleep. These stages are crucial for memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and physical recovery.
