1. Screen light impact on melatonin
The blue light emitted by phone screens, tablets, laptops, and televisions directly suppresses the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for signaling the body to prepare for sleep. Melatonin naturally rises in the evening as darkness falls, promoting drowsiness and helping regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Exposure to artificial screen light before bedtime delays this hormone release, making it more difficult to fall asleep and reducing overall sleep quality.
This disruption affects not just how quickly you fall asleep, but also the depth and restorative quality of sleep. Even if you manage to sleep for an adequate number of hours, the altered melatonin rhythm can cause fragmented sleep and impair the brain’s ability to enter deep, slow-wave sleep. This can lead to waking up feeling unrefreshed, with cognitive fog and reduced emotional resilience.
To mitigate these effects, experts recommend avoiding screens for at least 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. Using blue light filters or “night mode” settings on devices can reduce but not eliminate the impact. Ideally, nighttime routines should shift away from screen-based activities toward calming practices such as reading printed books or gentle relaxation exercises.

The circadian rhythm is an internal biological clock that orchestrates daily physiological processes, including sleep, hormone secretion, metabolism, and body temperature. This rhythm evolved under natural light-dark cycles, with darkness at night signaling the body to rest and repair.
Modern environments often expose people to artificial light sources throughout the night—LED alarm clocks, nightlights, streetlights filtering through windows, and electronic devices all contribute to a lighted environment that confuses the circadian system. Even low levels of ambient light can delay the timing of the circadian rhythm, leading to later sleep onset and disrupted sleep architecture.
Chronic circadian disruption has been associated with elevated stress hormone levels, impaired glucose metabolism, weight gain, mood disturbances, and weakened immune function. This is particularly concerning for individuals who work night shifts or have irregular sleep schedules, as their circadian misalignment can exacerbate health risks.
Improving bedroom darkness by using blackout curtains, turning off unnecessary lights, and minimizing electronic light sources can help maintain a consistent circadian rhythm and promote better sleep quality.
