One of its essential functions is supporting the production of myelin, the protective sheath surrounding nerves, which enables efficient nerve signal transmission.
Inadequate B12 impairs blood cell development, leading to megaloblastic anemia characterized by large, abnormal red blood cells that cannot transport oxygen efficiently. Neurologically, B12 deficiency causes demyelination and nerve dysfunction, which manifest as neuropathy and cognitive disturbances. It also contributes to elevated homocysteine levels, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
